Two Lingít Juneau residents recognized for contributions to arts in Alaska
Two Juneau residents were honored Tuesday night at the Alaska Governor’s Arts and Humanities Awards in Anchorage.
X̱ʼunei Lance Twitchell, a professor of Alaska Native Languages at the University of Alaska Southeast, received the Alaska Native Arts Award. The distinction recognizes his commitment to preserving Indigenous languages.
Twitchell is vice-chair of the Alaska Native Language Preservation & Advisory Council and has spent years recording, documenting and teaching Lingít.
Talk on the Rock: University of Alaska Southeast’s Rosh Rayback on Tidal Echoes – a SE Alaska literary and art journal
Episode 33: The Irene Ingle Public Library library sent out a post encouraging people to submit their art and writing to University of Alaska Southeast’s Tidal Echoes, a literary and art journal that highlights Southeast Alaskans. UAS’s Fall Intern Rosh Rayback, who is helping publish this year’s Tidal Echoes, chatted with KSTK’s Colette Czarnecki on everything Tidal Echoes.

Dr. Ernestine Hayes presenting “Pleistocene Raven: Old Stories, New Writing”

Dr. Hayes, the Alaska State Writer Laureate from 2017 to 2019, will present her new work with the Luce Indigenous Knowledge Fellowship project, which centers on three ancient Raven stories of fire, water, and daylight. Sharing her work with First Nations Development Institute, Hayes proposes that oral history and Western science tell stories of the same events, each complementing the other and both filling essential human needs.

UAS Students Selected for Prestigious NOAA Scholarships and Internships

University of Alaska Southeast proudly recognizes four students selected for the prestigious National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings (Hollings) scholarship. The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with awards that include academic assistance (up to $9,500 per year).
