Juneau, Alaska

Date of Press Release: January 28, 2008

The UAS School of Education offers a Master’s in Teaching for Elementary or Secondary grades. You can qualify for an Alaska teacher certificate in just one year by completing the UAS MAT program.  The certificate is transferable to all 50 states.
UAS is the only Alaska institution in which students can earn a master’s degree and certification in just 12 months.  The Elementary and Secondary education programs have a reputation for being extremely high quality programs, and graduates are highly sought by school districts from around Alaska.    The same group of students go through the year together in a cohort.  They form a very close, nurturing relationship with each other.  With a strong sense of community, the students support each other through thick and thin.   Strong and lasting friendships are made during the year!

Few programs have as much time allowed for your internship as the UAS MAT programs.  Students will do a full-day nine-month internship with a master teacher in the public schools.  In addition, each student has an internship advisor from the University, often a recently retired teacher, who comes to visit the student every week, making close connections between campus and classroom.

The UAS MAT programs also give students expertise in technology, which makes them a valued candidate for teaching positions in the following year.

Students find that with both internship advisors and instructors, we’re a very informal and committed group.  Everyone relaxes and enjoys each other, and students feel free to call on faculty or advisors for whatever they need.

Juneau is an outdoor recreation mecca. Alaska’s capital city is a great place to come for a little adventure while earning a teaching credential and a master’s degree.
