The annual fall lecture series Evening at Egan continues Friday, October 18 at the University of Alaska Southeast Auke Lake campus with Associate Professor of Environmental Science Dr. Sanjay Pyare’s presentation, "Sumatra to Southeast Alaska: what the journey of a migratory seabird can teach us." Fulbright scholar Pyare will talk about his recent five-month research experience in Indonesia which coincided with the migration of “local” seabird Aleutian tern, from its breeding grounds in Yakutat and other parts of Alaska to the coastal waters of Indonesia and back again.
He notes, “The Aleutian tern represents not just a story about the plight of the ocean environment and seabirds, but rather is a global messenger revealing some very fundamental and positive lessons about human society and outlook, regardless of the place we call home.”
Dr. Sanjay Pyare teaches environmental science courses at UAS and is the coordinator of the geography Bachelor of Science program. He earned his Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology from the University of Nevada, Reno and also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Hartwick College in New York. In addition to his post at UAS, he is also an affiliate professor with the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, as well as their Institute of Arctic Biology. He is also a research associate with the Conservation Biology Department of the Denver Zoological Foundation.
