Notice: The climbing wall will be closed starting May 6th and through Summer 2024 for flooring replacement and wall repairs.

Climbing is an excellent workout for people at every level of physical conditioning, so come learn the techniques and thrills of indoor climbing. No experience necessary. Includes all rentals and instruction.

The UAS Climbing wall offers both bouldering and climbing on belay over textured panels. The ceiling height is 30' at its peak and offers challenging routes for any skill level. All necessary climbing equipment to include shoes, harness, and Grigri belay are provided.

How to Get Climbing30' of vertical climbing

All members using the REC Center climbing wall must first complete a climbing orientation. See our current schedule on our events page for available dates and times. If our current orientations do not fit your schedule, we can set up a personal orientation if more than 2 people can attend. Email us your preferred date/time with the names of those wishing to attend.

  • Orientations are limited to 6 – 10 participants per class. (4 under COVID)
  • Orientations last approx. 45 minutes.
  • Certification can be in bouldering or bouldering & belay. Both certifiations include use of auto belay device.
  • Participants who pass the skill and practical test will complete a climbing card and climbing liability waiver which will stay on file.
  • Failure to pass the skill and practical test will require enrollment in another orientation at a later date.

Participant Renewals

Climbing certification renewals are required on an annual basis. Renewals require participants to complete a new climbing skills and practical test.

Gym Use & Equipment

To use the climbing gym you need only your Whale Card. The Whale Card is used to verify your climbing status and detained while climbing equipment is in use. Harnesses, belay devices (Grigri), carabineers and climbing shoes are available for check-out at the REC service desk free of charge. Those training for ice climbing may use our Dry-Ice Tools to develop forearm strength (helmets must be worn by climber and person on belay). We are the only gym in Juneau with an auto-belay device that enables climbers to climb our tallest routes without a belay. This equipment is for indoor gym use only and is not to leave the facility. We do have outdoor shoes for rental. The climbing gym is open when the REC is open, unless in use by a rental group or being used for ODS instruction. For the climbing gym rules view the Activity Areas section of our Building Policies and Behavioral Expectations.

UAS students/REC Center members can check-out shoulder bags with discs and course maps with tally sheets. Visit the REC service desk for more information and rental equipment.

Bike tuning standAuke Bay and Juneau are terrific places to ride. Realizing that most students don't bring tools with them, we're happy to provide Cycle Rescue Stations. These maintenance stations provides both a work stand, bike pump, and common tools needed for preparing tires, tightening handle bars and seats... you name it.

The Cycle Rescue Stations are installed at the Recreation Center and under the Mourant Courtyard eve of the Egan Library, near the bike racks and Testing/Learning Center entry.

During winter and late fall, we also provide indoor bike tuning stands and tools for when working on your bike indoors just seems the better option. While the outdoor maintenance stands are available to everyone, the indoor stations are for REC Center members only.
